Secret Sun Protection (With Udo’s Oil)

The weather has been fantastic for these last few weeks. Typically April is miserable and wet, but this year it has been glorious, and the summer looks to be starting. Us Brits are notorious for our lack of sun sense. On holiday you can always spot the British tourists by the heat radiating off their sunburn. This year why not add something new to your routine so that you have a little added protection from the sun. Udo’s Oil is our secret ingredient, and alongside sunscreen, can help with staving off the sunburn.

How Can Udo’s Oil Help Protect You From The Sun?

Udo’s Oil contains a balanced mixture of omegas 3 and 6. Omega 3, in particular, has been shown to help your skin resist the effects of too much sun. It does this in two different ways.

We can all spot someone who has spent too much time in the sun. We don’t just mean the people with Rudolf noses, but the people who look like they are slowly turning into leather. The premature ageing caused by too much time in the sun can be brutal.

However, people who have diets high in omega 3 suffer less from the ageing effects of the sun. This is because omega 3 is a crucial component in cell walls. When your body has a good supply of omega 3, it can build strong and healthy skin cells. These healthy cells are better able to keep moisture inside them. So, they stay plump and hydrated, even after being in the sun.

The other way that omega 3 protects from the sun is by boosting your natural ability to resist UV rays. It’s not like putting on factor 50 by any means. But, taking an omega 3 supplement has been shown to decrease the sensitivity of the skin to UV rays. This can allow you to be out in the sun for a little longer before you will experience the adverse effects of the sunshine.

Basically, having a good supply of omega 3 in your diet can give you a little extra buffer of protection when you are out in the sunshine. There is always a ‘safe’ amount of time to be in the sun, without protection. It depends on how bright the sun is and how much cloud cover is present. With a good supply of omega 3 in your diet, this window gets stretched open a little further.

Why You Might Want To Have More Time In The Sun

Even if you don’t worship the sun, it is important to spend some time soaking up the sun’s rays. Our bodies use sunlight to produce vitamin D. A vitamin that most of us are deficient in. Our bodies are only able to create vitamin D when exposed to UV rays. This means that if you cover up from head to toe, or wear sunscreen the whole time you are outside, then your body won’t have the chance to make this vital vitamin.

How To Make The Most Of Your Time In The Sun

If you want to maximise your time in the sun, you can take some time to prepare your skin. Slowly and carefully building up a tan can provide you with some protection. Then you can gradually extend your time in the sun without catching a burn. A tan does not protect you from skin cancer though so do still take care.

Hydrating before and after time in the sun is a great way to look after your skin. Being in the sun can dry your skin out, and as your skin gets the last call on the water, it can stay that way. By staying well hydrated, you can lessen the ageing effects of the sun. If you have overindulged, it can also reduce the chances of peeling after a sunburn.

Why Sun Safety Is Still Important

Using Udo’s Oil to improve your skin’s condition is not an alternative to practising proper sun safety. It will not protect you from the cancer-causing effects of too much UV radiation. What it does is give you longer before those effects take place.

Which is all to say that if you are going to be out in the sun for a long time, you should use sunscreen. You should still try to avoid the sun between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm. You should also coverup parts of your body that don’t see as much sun, sooner. Think shoulders and tops of feet. Remember that Udo’s Oil is only part of the tool kit for sun safety.
