Tasty Superfood Latte Recipes!

Superfood has been a buzzword in the world of nutrition for years and refers to foods that are known to offer significant health benefits. Incorporating superfoods into your daily diet is an easy way to boost your overall wellbeing and get the nutrients your body needs to thrive. Different superfoods offer different health benefits and trying to fit them all into your diet can be a struggle.

This is where superfood lattes comes in.

Superfood lattes have been taking over Instagram for a while, thanks to their beautiful colours and impressive aesthetics. These rainbow drinks offer much more than a pretty picture and are a delicious way to swap your daily coffee for a nutritious treat packed full of superfoods.

There are so many different types of superfoods that can be used to create tasty and healthy lattes, and each offers its own benefits. Depending on the results you want, you can create delicious superfood lattes quickly and easily in your home. Here are our favourite superfood lattes and the benefits they can bring;

Turmeric Latte

One of the most popular superfood lattes around is the turmeric latte, which is a simple yet powerful blend of turmeric, sugar, syrup or vanilla. Turmeric is a glowing yellow spice that is considered a superfood because it contains an antioxidant called curcumin.

A turmeric latte could help to reduce stress and inflammation in the body, while also helping reduce the risk of chronic disease. The amount of curcumin in a turmeric latte is low, and many health benefits will be determined by the type of milk used.

How to make: Place a saucepan over a gentle heat and add 350 ml of your favourite plant-based milk. Then add a quarter to a half a teaspoon of ground turmeric, ginger and cinnamon. Add half a teaspoon of vanilla extract, a twist of ground black pepper (to stimulate the curcumin) and a teaspoon of maple or agave syrup to sweeten. Whisk (or use a milk frother) continually until its hot, then pour into mugs. Finish with a dusting of cinnamon on top.

Matcha Latte

Matcha lattes are a common sight on many Instagram feeds as more and more people realise the health benefits this bright green beverage can deliver. Made with a combination of matcha and sugar or honey with your own milk preference, this superfood latte is the perfect coffee alternative. Matcha provides good levels of caffeine for that morning pick me up, but energy is released slowly over time. Made from dried and powdered green tea leaves, matcha contains high levels of catechins which work as antioxidants within the body.

A matcha latte can offer health benefits, including reduced cholesterol and blood pressure, and many benefits are similar to that of green tea.

How to make: Whisk together one teaspoon of matcha powder, water and maple syrup (or another liquid sweetener) in your mug. Then heat 250ml of your favourite plant-based milk (we choose coconut milk for this recipe). Use a whisk or milk frother to give the milk a foamy texture and then pour over the matcha blend.

Superboost your superfood latte with cinnamon!

Offering all the health benefits of the matcha latte, a cinnamon matcha latte has added flavour thanks to the cinnamon. Choosing cinnamon matcha lattes over your usual beverage will lead to benefits such as boosted concentration, enhanced metabolism, and improved skin. The cinnamon works to balance the blood sugar levels and keep them stable while balancing the strong matcha tea flavour.

Charcoal Latte

The popularity of activated charcoal has been on the rise in recent years, with many choosing charcoal lattes, charcoal foods and even charcoal toothpaste because of the health benefits. A charcoal latte is a striking black drink, made from milk, activated charcoal and additional flavouring to suit your preference.

Activated charcoal is well known for its detoxifying properties as it can absorb chemicals from the gut. Medical professionals use it for treating drug overdoses and poisoning thanks to its powerful effects on the body.

How to make: In a saucepan over a gentle heat add 300 ml of plant-based milk, one teaspoon of food-grade activated charcoal and one teaspoon of agave syrup, add half a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk quickly to make the milk frothy. Once hot, you can blitz in a blender for extra froth or transfer to your favourite mug. If you'd prefer an iced latte, don't heat the mixture and instead pour the latte over ice.

Lucuma Cacao Latte

Packed with not just one, but three different superfoods, the lucuma cacao latte offers many health benefits. Made with lucuma powder, cocoa powder, hemp powder and your choice of milk and flavourings, this superfood latte is easy to make at home. The lucuma is high in carotenes which combat ageing and are good for the eyesight, and the superfood is also high in iron, vitamin B3 and fibre.

Combined with the health benefits of raw cacao, this latte can work as a mild stimulant making it a great alternative to coffee. Raw cacao is extremely high in magnesium, sulphur, antioxidant flavonoids and essential fatty acids which help to raise good cholesterol.

How to make: To a saucepan add 250ml of almond milk (or your favourite plant-based milk) then add one teaspoon of maca powder, lucuma powder and hemp powder. Add two teaspoons of cacao and a pinch of cinnamon. Add a dash of vanilla extract to taste. Whisk until hot and then pour and devour.
